- Provide hands-on and student-centred teaching to ensure most effective learning.
- Encourage students to recognize the importance of getting involved in community issues such as protecting the environment.
Formed the Silverthorn Environmental Protection Agency, a school-based organization that has given students the opportunity to take part in environmental activities for the past 10 years:
- students raised funds and did the work to naturalize the school's courtyard, and created the Mill Place Garden at the school
- outreach programs include field trips with the local junior school's Green Club, work projects at conservation authority field centres, and planting plants and trees with Communities in Bloom.
Brought new technology, such as computers and video cameras, into classroom to allow students to present their discoveries and studies. Students regularly contribute to the geography department's environmental web page. Started as an independent study project for the environmental class, the site has become a major source of environmental information for students and others.
Designed and teaches a travel and tourism course that covers the geography curriculum through work and activities that can be of practical use to students.
"I first met Bill Menzo as a high school student with little interest in geography or environmental studies. Upon entering his classroom that September, I never would have believed that nine years later I would be standing here with a deep passion for the natural world and a bachelor's degree in both geography and environmental studies. I owe this all to Bill." Former student
"Bill Menzo is one of those teachers raising the bar to new heights." Colleague
