Teaching approach:

  • The process of learning is key to success in the classroom.

Outstanding achievements:

Embarked on a mission to teach students about Canadian history and heritage. The school-wide Proud Canadian Kids initiative energized the entire school (and parents!) to learn more about Canada and its history. The Canadian fact of the week is broadcast over the school PA system. A monthly newsletter features facts and opportunities for research and family interaction, including the Canadian question-of-the-month as well as crossword puzzles and word searches for gifted students. Not only has this program created proud, knowledgeable Canadians, it has improved their academic skills to an impressive degree.

Program created so much confidence, pride and commitment to learning that community charitable groups and local business have offered support and three other schools have adopted the program.

Spearheaded project to beautify asphalt schoolyard. Earth-friendly garden gives children the opportunity to learn about chemical-free gardening, birds and butterflies. Students grow flowers from seeds, harvest and dry blossoms, then sell potpourri as stocking stuffers as a school fund-raiser.

Incorporates class-specific material into teaching: for example, teaches children to count to 10 in the languages of the class's immigrant children, and borrows Inuit sculpture while teaching a unit about the Inuit.

Rave reviews:

"Whenever I wake up and know it is a school day, I cheer to myself!" Student

"As a parent volunteer I have been able to observe, first hand, her gentle manner and genuine love of both the children and the material she teaches." Parent
