Teaching approach:

  • Create a classroom climate that encourages students to be academically adventurous and to do more than the bare minimum.
  • Make links between a variety of topics to broaden students' experience and enliven the classroom.
  • Create and communicate clear, firm and demanding expectations and standards for students' work.

Outstanding achievements:

Extends and expands students' skills in French through field trips to the islands of St. Pierre and Miquelon and to Paris, and through school exchange programs with a school in Cannes, France, and one in Saint-Hyacinthe, Quebec. As part of the Quebec exchange, students develop and perform in a 45-minute variety show of music and skits.

Created a number of new courses and programs at Holy Heart High School, including an accelerated core French program, French immersion courses and Spanish courses. To help students keep up with the demanding work load of the International Baccalaureate (IB) and Advanced Placement (AP) programs, Rice teaches extra classes at lunch, during the Christmas holidays and after school.

Students excel in her classes, achieving high marks on both IB and AP exams. Several have gone on to become French immersion teachers themselves.

Worked with colleagues to bring IB program to school, writing course descriptions and curriculum for French and Spanish courses and teaching French-language course on European history.

"It may be that Claire Rice's most valuable asset is her ability to interact with her students and develop a strong rapport. They simply adore her." Fellow teacher
