Grades/Subjects Taught: Grade 12 English, grades 10-12 International Baccalaureate English, theatre appreciation

Teaching approach:

  • Stimulate students to think critically and analytically, and to challenge and get personally involved in the literature being studied.
  • In any decision, always do what's best for kids.

Outstanding achievements:

Introduced innovative Grade 10 novel study unit using literature circles. Students work in self-monitoring groups to investigate a section of a novel then combine the "pieces of the puzzle" to study the whole. This teaching strategy is so successful that it is now standard in the school's English department and has been presented at the provincial language arts council conference.

Implemented new unit of study with special emphasis on literature of the American and Canadian West. Created units examining the work of several Canadian authors and playwrights.

High rates of both enrolment and attendance attest that Douziech's innovative teaching methods and dynamic personality make hers some of the most popular classes and courses in the school. Her students excel in provincial diploma exams with close to 100 percent pass rates.

Developed programs to complement English language arts courses. For example, devised a course, offered in conjunction with Edmonton Citadel Theatre's Student Club, to teach theatre study and appreciation. This program is now a model for other schools in the district. Douziech built on the success of the theatre appreciation course to create a film studies course.

Rave reviews:

"If I could choose one descriptor for Mrs. Douziech, without hesitation, I would choose integrity." Principal

"Karen Douziech is someone who inspires me, my colleagues and our students every day we spend with her. She is our hero." Fellow teacher
