Teaching approach:

Shows students that they can "get math" and become successful.

Leads by example.

Makes math applicable to the student's lives.

Outstanding achievements:

Hilton created the "homework hotline" (a voice mail system) where her homework assignments are always readily available to students. Grades are calculated using software such as Micrograde, and students can always access their current marks through a Web tool called Webgrade.

She has helped increase number of girls taking higher level math courses.

She offers daily tutorials at lunch and before school so that students can get the help they require. She has created a very low-key, relaxed and comfortable environment where students are welcome to bring their lunches and get the help they need.

She also developed a policy of sharing materials, lesson designs and binders among staff, especially for colleagues teaching a subject for the first time.

In Praise Of:

"Her classroom atmosphere is one that brings stellar results with our students. She demands the best from her students and offers support and honest evaluation when it is needed." - Math Curriculum Leader

"She sets high standards for herself which has resulted in a high quality of instruction for her students. I consider working with Ellen one of the most valuable learning experiences I have had in my teaching career." - Teacher
