Outstanding achievements:

Ms. Lohnes obtained $10,000 Band Aid grant from the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences to purchase instruments, music and equipment for the school. The grant was given to only four schools in Canada that demonstrated a need and determination to begin or improve their band programs.

With a limited budget and equipment, she was instrumental in starting a new band program at the Mahone Bay School. Along with teaching part-time in another school, Lohnes agreed to teach two mornings a week for grade 9 students and run early morning practices. Eventually, this led to the establishment of a full program for all interested students.

Approximately 60-70% of the student body has been in the music program, the highest level in the board.

Ms. Lohnes organizes many fundraising activities in support of the music program/school band, including poinsettia and cookie dough sales, as well as concerts and fashion shows. This seed money is used for instrument repairs, the purchase of music scores and incidental costs.
