Teaching approach:

  • Creativity is the driving force behind Ms. Amster's teaching.
  • She aims to guide students through the learning process.
  • Respect and compassion for others is encouraged and taught.
  • She instills in children a love of learning and believes that children should know that their work is valued.

Outstanding achievements:

Ms. Amster creates and maintains a rich, stimulating learning environment at the beginning of each school year by arriving two weeks early to set up the physical layout of the classroom.

She supports cross-curricular learning through a variety of creative activities. For example, she uses a nutrition theme across different subject areas of the curriculum.

Along with a colleague, Ms. Amster started a collaborative mentorship program between the grade five Morals class and her kindergarten class, exploring feelings and identifying results and solutions. This contributed to a school-wide peer mediation system to be implemented in coming years.

Ms. Amster teaches respect and compassion by involving her class in raising funds to support a foster child. She organized a dance-a-thon which raised $2,500 for the Quebec Society for Disabled Children, and has assisted another teacher in organizing and raising funds for the Terry Fox Foundation.

In Praise Of:

"Her work and relationship with staff, parents and community in general, are truly exemplary! She is indeed, in my opinion, truly exceptional." - Principal, Saint Bernard Elementary School

"… what makes her stand out above the rest is that she doesn't teach for a living, but rather lives to teach, and this show in everything she does, everyday." - Parent
