Subjects and grades taught: Physical Education for Grades 1-6

For over two decades, Mrs. Susan Steele has used her passion for physical education not only to promote healthy lifestyles, but to also foster teamwork, confidence and inclusivity with her students in the gym as well as the classroom. She takes the time to get to know each student personally and identifies how they can all excel in school.

Teaching approach

Mrs. Steele ensures there is always full participation in her classes by focusing on inclusion and adapting her teaching methods to focus on the interests of all her students.

Outstanding achievements:

  • Developed a "Physical Literacy Class", a safe space for individualized instruction for students with difficulty with skill development and coordination;
  • Started a Physical Education Portfolio for over 500 students, capturing memories with photographs and student reflections to share with families when students graduate at the end of Grade 6;
  • Led a Healthy Living Committee which organized activities such as the annual Family Fun Runs fortheColby Village Community and coordinated the Family Health Fair for over 400 people;
  • Provided input for the upcoming provincial primary-9 physical education curriculum for the Nova Scotia Department of Education and Early Childhood Development.

Rave reviews

She will no doubt have a role in teaching her colleagues across Nova Scotia how to implement these new outcomes as she is not only respected for her knowledge but also for her leadership and credibility with her peers.

Consultant

As a parent, I am so very thankful my boys have a teacher such as Susan Steele. I knew how great she was in their eyes from day one by listening to their accounts of what they do in Physical Education each day and the things she has taught them.
