Mr. Gregory Woolgar's goal is to "…make my students' five hours in the school the best five hours of their day." He accomplishes this mission by creating a stimulating learning environment where all subjects are linked to other disciplines. He connects all learning to the 'real world' and his innovative teaching style includes inviting guest speakers to share their experiences and using technology to challenge students to search for deeper answers.
- Immersed his students in daily "tech time" (e.g., developed APP-ternoon class where students are given technology focused projects such as creating a commercial to share with the class; posted questions on "Today's Meet" site where students engaged in debate in a speed round format online);
- Promoted a caring school culture with the "Silly Squad", a monthly theme day where students and staff are encouraged to give spare change. Over the past five years the squad has a student participation rate of over 90% and has donated over $15,000 to local, provincial and international charities;
- Presented creative lessons in life skills such as using hermit crabs, fish and plants as tools for teaching responsibility and teamwork with his students;
- Facilitated annual district wide "Think Tank" where teachers convened to share best case studies on curriculum and technology matters.
What sets Greg apart as a leader? One only needs to walk into his classroom and watch him in action. It's not about Greg…just watch and listen to the students. The smiles on their faces and their total respect and engagement as a learning community tell the story of Greg's leadership. He changes their lives.
He makes me want to learn new things because he makes learning fun. He is also a hero because I feel like he changed my life because I feel like I can do anything.
