Insolvency Statistics in Canada — June 2009

The total number of insolvencies in June 2009 was 51.2 percent higher than the number in June 2008. It is worth noting that during the 1990–91 recession — particularly during the 11-month period from July 1990 to May 1991 — increases in total insolvencies ranged between 37.3 percent and 76.3 percent when compared with the same month the year before. In that same period, there were five consecutive months where insolvencies increased more than 60 percent over the same month the previous year.

In a comparison of the 12-month period ending June 30, 2009, with the 12 months ending June 30, 2008, total insolvencies increased by 28.6 percent.

For the 12-month period ending June 30, 2009, business insolvencies decreased by 4.9 percent compared with the 12 months ending June 30, 2008. Most of this is because of a reduction in insolvencies in the Construction and Retail Trade sectors. In fact, during the 12 months up to and including June 2009, the Construction sector posted its lowest volume of insolvencies on record.
