Canadian Warranty Commitment Program Comes to a Close

OTTAWA, September 16, 2009 — The Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Industry, announced today that the Canadian Warranty Commitment Program, introduced earlier this year is being brought to a close.

“The objective of the warranty program was to provide confidence to GM's and Chrysler's customers during a period of uncertainty while the companies restructured,” said Minister Clement. “With both companies now emerged from bankruptcy protection, consumers are assured their warranty commitments will be honoured. Therefore, there is no longer the need for the federal government to continue with the Canadian Warranty Commitment Program.”

On April 7, 2009, the Government of Canada created the Canadian Warranty Commitment Program for new vehicles purchased from General Motors of Canada Limited (GMCL) and Chrysler Canada Inc (CCI).

Under the Canadian Warranty Commitment Program, the federal government committed to honouring consumer warranties on new vehicles purchased from GMCL or CCI for a limited period while improved restructuring plans were being implemented.

The Canadian warranty program parallelled the U.S. warranty program announced by President Barack Obama on March 30, 2009. The U.S. has also since terminated its program.
